Shouldhalde (2024)
This 64-minute album—although multi-channel concertant performance is possible—marks a return to intimate home listening. Liner notes:
‘Shouldhalde’ is the result of a long process that stretched from 2019 to 2024, a long awaited full-length album after ‘Residual’ (2002). The seven pieces of the album were composed using an all-over technique, such that materials reappear, often in disguise or shadows, across the hourlong work. At the same time, the pieces were carefully carved out in their own singularities. As a bilingual word play, ‘Shouldhalde’ alludes both to the provision of spaces for debris, and the burial of demands, obligations and virtues. ’Selva’ opens the scenario perhaps in a woodland. ‘Verwildern’ meanders around forms of overgrowth and rewilding. ‘Tangentiale’ asks for moments of contact in passing. ‘Élan Vital’ celebrates the positive energies in our lives that resist the bleak current state of affairs in the world. ‘Knollen’ could be read as another Lem-inspired morphological word, bringing together such disparate things as plant growth and underwater minerals. A ’Vagabund’ is a creature that wanders around, not aimlessly but with aims in the corner of the eye. ’Autonom’ lets us observe from an undiscovered vantage point, with no wish to approach or interfere.
